Guide to Measuring Your Project Area for Glass Balustrades

Step 1: Preparation
- Take Your Time: Accurate measurements are crucial. Double and triple-check your measurements to avoid ordering a system that’s too big or too small.
Step 2: Draw a Plan
-
Create a Drawing: Start with a drawing of where you want the glass balustrade system to be installed. Use a printable plan template to help collate your information. {Download an example here}
Step 3: Measure the Area
- Take Measurements: Carefully measure the area where the balustrade will be installed. Ensure all measurements are precise.
Tip 1: Identify the Outside Edge of Your Platform
- Measure the Outside Edge: This is the most crucial measurement. Different balustrade designs have different fixing center requirements, so providing the outer platform dimensions helps in calculating the required balustrade size.
Tip 2: Measure Parapet Walls
- Height and Width: If your project includes a parapet wall that will support the balustrade fittings, measure its height and width.
Tip 3: Determine the Height
- Standard Height: The standard height for a balustrade is 1,100mm. If you need a different height, note your requirements to share with the provider.
Tip 4: Measure the Fall (if applicable)
-
Sloping Platform:
- Hold a string at the highest point of the fall.
- Have a second person hold the string at the end of the fall and pull it tight.
- Use a spirit level to ensure the string is level.
- Measure the distance from the end of the string to the ground (Rise).
- Measure the total length of the string (Fall).
- Record these measurements as Rise (height) and Fall (length) to calculate the angle of the slope.
Tip 5: Measuring Tips
- Metric and Imperial: Most tapes provide measurements in both metric (centimeters/millimeters) and imperial (inches). Metric is preferred, but conversions can be made if you measure in inches.
-
Using the Tape Measure:
- When measuring up to a wall or post, push the silver end of the tape against it. The silver end moves to provide an accurate measure.
- When measuring at the end of the platform, place the tape end over the platform and pull it tight. The end will move, which is normal.
- Metric tapes show numbers in centimeters, with small marks in between representing millimeters. For example, 2cm and 6 small marks equal 26mm (2.6cm).
- Some tapes also show meter marks. For instance, 1m 2cm and 6 small marks equal 1026mm (102.6cm).
Step 4: Send Your Measurements
- Email Your Plan: Send your measurements and plan to us for a quote. Remember, we cannot be held responsible for any measurement errors.
By following these steps, you’ll ensure accurate measurements and a smooth installation process for your glass balustrades
